Our car vs. the mountains

So far our car has done pretty well with mountain roads. It probably helps that most of our mountain driving has been done in areas where we don't have to go real fast. On the trip from Jackson WY to Reno NV we finally found a spot where the mountains gave our car all it could handle. The mountain pass we took out of Jackson included a couple mile stretch with 10% grade going up and a corresponding stretch with a 10% grade going down.

Bev was driving and she was worried about whether or not our car could handle it. On the uphill side she had the gas pedal firmly glued to the floorboards during the entire stretch of 10% grade. On the downhill side she used a low gear in the transmission, but she still had to use the brakes a great deal.

The car reported gas mileage on the way up of around 5mpg, but the downhill side kind of made up for that!
